On 31 May 2023, during the First Uzbekistan-Germany Health Forum, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between the Republican Specialized Scientific-Practical Medical Centre for Endocrinology named after Academician J. Kh. Turakulov (RSNPMCE) and the International Academy for Management and Technology (INTAMT).
In August of the same year, INTAMT organised the first visit of the directors of RSNPMCE from Tashkent and its regional branches. As a result of meetings and negotiations, a project for the advanced training and specialised education of Uzbek doctors in Germany was initiated.
The relevance of diabetes, its prevention, and the treatment of complications extends not only to European countries and the United States but also to the Central Asian region. The first joint project between INTAMT and RSNPMCE focused on key areas of diabetology: training in “diabetes schools,” the use of modern insulin pumps, including closed-loop systems, the implementation of advanced scientific research, as well as methods for treating diabetic foot syndrome and bariatric surgery.
With the support of partner clinics and private diabetology centres, INTAMT developed an intensive training programme, which was conducted from 18 November to 13 December 2024.
The main speaker of the programme was the leading German diabetologist Professor Dr. Stephan Martin. His lectures and practical exercises, held at the West German Diabetes and Health Centre in Düsseldorf (WDGZ), which he directs, enabled participants to delve into modern methods for diagnosing prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, as well as to learn about the latest scientific research and treatment practices in Germany.
The practical component of the internship took place in leading medical institutions such as the Heart and Diabetes Centre NRW (HDZ NRW) and the University Hospital Cologne. Participants gained insights into the treatment of diabetic foot syndrome at the Wound Centre Mittelrhein in Boppard and the St. Vinzenz Hospital Cologne, one of Germany’s leading clinics in this field.
Special thanks for professional support during the four-week internship were expressed by Uzbek surgeons and anaesthesiologists to Dr. Dmitrij Dajchin, Head of the Centre of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery at the St. Martinus Hospital in Düsseldorf.
German professionals highly valued the professionalism of their Uzbek colleagues, while the Uzbek doctors highlighted the warm reception, the extensive knowledge acquired, and the willingness of German partners to share their expertise for the benefit of Uzbekistan’s healthcare system.
