From 11th to 30th November, 2018, the INTAMT Academy organized a multidisciplinary continuing education program for paediatricians from the Republic of Tatarstan, winner of the annual Best Physicians’ Competition of 2018, on “Healthcare in Germany and the Netherlands: Organization of Medical Supply and innovative medical technologies “.

Tatarstan is one of the most economically developed republics of the Russian Federation and is open to innovative foreign experience in a variety of fields. Medical care in Tatarstan is considered to be the best in Russia, the republic was awarded a federal premium of 500,000 rubles for best results in modernization of health facilities.

During the exchange event, the group of 20 participants visited leading health care facilities in Germany and the Netherlands. The paediatricians got to know the activities of the Catholic Dusseldorf Association, visited a general hospital, a rehabilitation center and university clinics in Germany and the Netherlands. In addition, individual visits were organized in the respective discipline.

A part of the participants, consisting of neurologists and neurosurgeons, visited an integrated department of neurology and neurosurgery of the NeuroCenter Twente. During the visit, they gained valuable insights into the best practices in the field of intensive care, the use of deep machine learning systems to estimate the long-term prognosis in patients after cardiac arrest in the ICU, and the introduction of navigation systems in endoscopic neurosurgical spine procedures. In addition, they learned about the success of long-term treatment with deep brain stimulation in Parkinson’s patients, about spinal cord stimulation in patients with incomplete paraplegia (spinal cord injury) and in patients with certain types of spasticity (for example due to ICP).
