As part of the Russian authorities’ programme to promote engineers, the INTAMT Academy organised a study trip on environmental safety in the treatment of hazardous waste for specialists from Taganrog from 30 November to 5 December 2015.

The globally increasing volume of waste and its gigantic scale pose a real danger to people and the environment. In the course of the training, the Russian engineers showed great professional interest in European successes in waste recycling. The structure of the training programme allowed the participants to get a holistic idea of the cycle in hazardous waste management.

The specialists from Russia had the opportunity to visit German companies that, among other things, practice systematic recycling – from waste collection and environmentally safe storage to transport and the use of innovative solutions for waste separation and disposal. During the visit to Currenta GmbH & Co OHG, a joint venture of Bayer AG and Lanxess AG, the training participants’ attention was focused on the high level of control in the storage, detoxification and incineration of hazardous waste.

At the Institute for Processing and Recycling at RWTH Aachen University, the Russian engineers learned about new technologies for the use of hazardous waste as secondary raw materials. Furthermore, the innovative facilities as well as research methods of the recycling processes were highlighted.
